About the Book

What if the most important work of leadership isn't what you achieve, but who you become?

Most leadership books tell you to chase results harder. This one starts somewhere different. In Roots, Relationships, and Results, Shawn D. Moon, Jon Laudie, and Cameron Moon challenge the familiar formula and surface a truth that kept showing up across more than 100 unguarded conversations with leaders: lasting results don't come from pressure, position, or personality. They grow from deeper roots.

Who you become as a leader is shaped in the quiet, unseen places: how you hold yourself together under pressure, how you show up for the people counting on you, and how you decide what actually matters when everything feels urgent. The leaders people trust, seek out, and remember aren't the ones chasing outcomes hardest. They're the ones who did the work on the inside first.

This book will help you align your values with your actions, invest in the relationships that make results possible, and lead in a way that builds something worth remembering. Because in the end, results don't come from what you chase. They grow from what you cultivate.

"Results don't come from what you chase. They grow from what you cultivate."

Jon Laudie

President & CFO, Zerorez · Finance Executive · Leadership Thought Leader

Jon Laudie has spent his career at the intersection of finance, strategy, and people. What keeps drawing him back to that intersection is a pattern he has watched repeat itself across every organization he has been part of: the best-run companies are also the best places to work.

Over more than 15 years, he has led teams across a wide range of organizations, from startups finding their footing to multi-billion dollar enterprises, in both public and private settings, including 1-800 Contacts, Ancestry, Lucid, Netflix, and Zerorez. That journey gave him a ground-level view of what leadership actually looks like under different pressures, at different scales, and in very different cultures. Those observations are what he brings to this book.

Jon holds a BS and an MBA from Brigham Young University's Marriott School of Business. Outside of work, he is most at home with his wife and three kids, and can usually be found on a golf course, a mountain trail, or picking up whichever instrument is closest.

Cameron Moon

Leadership Consultant, FranklinCovey · Entrepreneur · Speaker

Cameron Moon is a senior consultant with FranklinCovey, where he works with organizations across industries to develop leaders at every level, from the C-suite to the front line. Known for his dynamic facilitation style, Cameron has a rare ability to make complex leadership principles feel immediately accessible and actionable.

A self-described "leadership junkie," Cameron has studied and practiced leadership development since a young age and brings that passion to every room he enters. His work in Roots, Relationships, and Results reflects his core belief: that great leadership is both a discipline and a practice, something that can be taught, developed, and sustained over a lifetime.

This book reframes leadership in the most honest way I have encountered. It does not give you shortcuts. It gives you something better: a foundation. Every leader I know needs to read this.

Moon, Laudie, and Moon have written something rare: a leadership book that actually made me stop and look in the mirror. The research is rigorous, but the writing never gets in the way of the truth.

The framework in this book is simple enough to share with your whole team and deep enough to spend a career practicing. That combination is almost impossible to pull off. They pulled it off.
